How to Add Custom Profile Fields in Slack

Slack’s built-in profile fields cover names, titles, and contact details, but many teams need more: department, location, team, or a start date. Custom profile fields let workspace admins add exactly those.
Who can add them
Custom fields are created by workspace owners and admins, and they’re usually part of a paid Slack plan. Once an admin adds a field, it appears on every member’s profile for them to complete.
Add custom fields as an admin
- Click your workspace name, then open Settings & administration → Workspace settings.
- Find the profile fields section (labeled around “Profile” or “Members’ profiles”).
- Add a new field, give it a clear name (for example, “Department” or “Office”), and choose its type.
- Save. The field now shows on everyone’s profile.
Exact menu labels vary slightly by plan, but custom fields are always managed from the workspace admin settings, not an individual profile.
How members fill them in
Once the fields exist, members complete them from Edit Profile on desktop:
- Click your profile picture, then Profile → Edit Profile.
- Fill in the custom fields your workspace added.
- Click Save Changes.
