How to Add Your Job Title in Slack
How to add or change your job title in Slack on desktop and mobile so teammates know your role at a glance, plus what to do if the field is locked.
Your job title in Slack gives teammates instant context on who you are and what you do, which is especially helpful in a large workspace where you don’t know everyone. Adding it takes just a few steps.
Add your title on desktop
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Profile, then Edit Profile.
- In the What I do (title) field, enter your role, for example “Product Designer.”
- Click Save Changes.
Add your title on mobile (iOS & Android)
- Tap You in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap your profile picture, then Edit Profile.
- Fill in the title field with your role.
- Tap Save.
Your title then appears under your name on your profile.
Keep it short and clear
A good Slack title is a few words that describe your role, not your full job description. “Marketing Manager” reads better than a long string of responsibilities. If your team spans regions or functions, a consistent style across everyone’s titles makes the whole directory easier to scan.
If the title field is locked
Some workspaces populate titles from an HR or identity system and lock the field. If you can’t edit it, a workspace owner or admin needs to make the change.
A title is most useful alongside the rest of a complete profile — a real photo, full name, and pronouns. See how to update your Slack profile fields for the full set.
For teams that want titles and other fields filled in consistently, Tidybot reminds members who are missing required profile fields, so you don’t have to chase each person individually.
Frequently asked questions
- Where does my job title appear in Slack?
- Your title shows up under your name on your profile and in the profile panel people see when they click your name in a conversation. It gives teammates quick context on your role.
- Is the Slack title field the same as What I do?
- Yes. Slack labels the title field What I do on some profiles. Whatever the label, it's the short line describing your role, such as Product Designer or Support Lead.
- Why can't I edit my job title in Slack?
- If the field is locked or greyed out, your workspace manages titles through a directory. Ask a workspace owner or admin to update it for you.
