Slack Profile Picture Not Updating? How to Fix It

Updated August 7, 2026

Why your Slack profile picture isn't updating and how to fix it: image limits, caching, refreshing the app, and letting the change propagate.

You uploaded a new photo, but Slack still shows the old one (or the default avatar). This is almost always a quick fix. Work through these in order.

1. Check the image meets Slack’s limits

If the upload silently failed, your photo won’t change. Make sure your image is:

  • A square photo, at least 512×512 pixels.
  • In JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP format.
  • Under 1 MB in file size.

An image that’s too large or an unsupported format is the single most common reason an update doesn’t stick. See the full Slack profile picture requirements for details.

2. Refresh the app or browser

A cached copy of your old photo is the next usual suspect:

  • Desktop app: press Cmd+R (Mac) or Ctrl+R (Windows) to reload, or fully quit and reopen Slack.
  • Browser: do a hard refresh, or clear your cache and reload.
  • Mobile: close the app completely and reopen it.

3. Give it a minute to propagate

Profile changes are usually instant, but at busy times they can take a minute or two to appear across every channel and everyone’s view. If you’ve just uploaded, wait briefly and check again.

4. Re-upload the photo

If it still hasn’t changed, remove the current photo and upload it again. See how to change your Slack avatar for the steps, and how to remove your profile picture if you want to clear it first.

Still stuck?

If the photo uploads but teammates see an old one, that’s caching on their end and clears on its own. For anything else, Slack’s own support can help with account-specific issues.

If you manage a workspace, Tidybot can help ensure everyone ends up with a working, real profile photo by flagging members who are still on the default avatar.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Slack profile picture not updating?
The most common causes are an image that exceeds Slack's size or format limits, a cached old photo in your app or browser, or the change simply needing a minute to propagate across the workspace. Refreshing usually resolves it.
How long does a Slack profile picture take to update?
Usually it's instant, but during busy periods it can take a minute or two to appear everywhere. If it's been longer than that, the issue is more likely caching or an image that didn't upload correctly.
Why does my old Slack photo still show to other people?
Other people may still see a cached version of your old photo for a short while. It typically clears on its own; a refresh or app restart on their end speeds it up.
