How to Remove Your Slack Profile Picture

Updated August 7, 2026

How to remove your Slack profile picture on desktop and mobile, what appears after you delete it, and how to replace it with a new photo instead.

Maybe you uploaded the wrong image, or you just want a fresh start. Removing your Slack profile picture takes only a moment, and it’s easy to reverse.

Remove your photo on desktop

  1. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Profile, then Edit Profile.
  3. Click your current profile photo.
  4. Choose Remove Photo.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Remove your photo on mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Tap You in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then Edit Profile.
  3. Tap your photo and select the remove option.
  4. Save your changes.

What you’ll see afterward

Once removed, Slack shows the default profile picture: a colored square with your initials. Nothing else about your account changes. If you remove your photo and later want one again, you can upload a new image at any time.

Consider replacing instead of removing

In most workspaces, a real photo helps far more than a blank default. If your goal is to change your picture rather than go without one, you can skip the removal step entirely and just upload a new image, which replaces the old one automatically. See how to change your Slack avatar and the full guide to Slack profile picture sizes and formats.

If you manage a workspace and want to avoid a sea of default avatars after people remove photos, Tidybot flags members without a profile picture and nudges them to add one.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when I remove my Slack profile picture?
When you remove your photo, Slack reverts to the default profile picture: a colored square with your initials. Your account and messages are unaffected, only the image changes.
Can I remove my Slack photo without adding a new one?
Yes. You can delete your current photo and leave it as the default avatar. If you'd rather swap it, uploading a new image replaces the old one in one step.
How do I remove a Slack profile picture on mobile?
Open the You tab, tap your profile picture, choose Edit Profile, tap your photo, and select the option to remove it. Then save your changes.
